Thoughtful Response to Agitation, Escalation and Meltdowns in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

A training DVD

With nearly two hours of training, this DVD presents a way of understanding individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders that helps guide both proactive and, when necessary, reactive responses to escalating agitation. The premise of this presentation is that consequences don't always, or even often, work with individuals with ASD who are, by the nature of their diagnosis, easily frustrated and often inflexible.

"As an autistic support teacher, I believe this is a must see for educators and paraeducators working with autistic children. Rebecca gives solid, valuable advice with understanding, compassion, and humor." - Cindy Glew, Teacher for Pittsburgh Public Schools

"I want to thank you for your wonderful DVD on "Thoughtful Response to ...Meltdowns..."! I showed it to 83 of our school staff members, and all were very grateful to have seen it. Our behavior consultant loved your examples and hopes to follow some of your format in her CPI training. You seamlessly melded CPI, Ross Greene's Explosive Child info, and the best of autism practices. I recommend your DVD to everyone I can."

From Goals to Data and Back Again: Adding Backbone to Developmental Intervention for Children with Autism

Authors: Jill Fain Lehman, Ph. D. and Rebecca Klaw, M.S., M.Ed.

    225 pages plus CD-ROM 1
    $30.00 + $5.00 shipping and handling
1st edition available from KidAccess, Inc., 412-521-8552 or www.kidaccess.com.

2nd edition, $39.95 (unchanged, just different publisher), Jessica Kingsley Publishers, London and New York, 2003, www.jkp.com.

In this book, Lehman & Klaw argue for the importance of bolstering developmental approaches to intervention with data collection and analysis. Through a balance of discussion and examples taken from children across the autism spectrum they introduce a straightforward way to:

  • Write developmentally sound goals that are measurable,
  • Design data collection sheets that allow for easy and accurate recording of observations,
  • Perform analyses using simple spreadsheet functions that require no mathematical skills,
  • Interpret the results of the analysis to determine if a child is making progress, and
  • Use the interpretation to inform the next round of intervention decisions.

The basic text is supplemented with appendices that provide handouts for staff or student training as well as exercises (to be used with the accompanying CD-ROM) to practice the skills described.

The book is intended for therapists, educators and clinical supervisors who design intervention for children with developmental disabilities, as well as for teachers who wish to add a relevant and accessible statistical component to their curriculum. It is also intended for parents who wish to participate more fully in their child's intervention or better understand available methods for evaluating their child's progress.

Jill Fain Lehman, Ph.D., has been a researcher in the cognitive and computer sciences for 20 years. As a Senior Research Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she has authored more than 40 publications. She is the owner of KidAccess, Inc., a company dedicated to using cognitive science to support cognitively impaired children. Dr. Lehman is also the mother of a child with ASD.

1. CD-ROM is both Mac and PC compatible but requires Microsoft Excel (97 or higher) for completion of the computer-based exercises.
